Industry Tech Roundtables

The IEEE UFFC-S Industry Engagement Committee invites you to a break time session: The Virtual Round Tables Discussion at IEEE IUS 2022!

Join the discussions with our renowned hosts and speakers on:

Ultrasound applications, achievements, and bottlenecks in NDT hosted by Hoda Hashemi
Speakers: Dr. Patrick Johnston and Dr. Matthew Webster

Dr. Patrick Johnston received his PhD degree in Physics from Washington University in St Louis, St. Louis, MO, USA, where he conducted research related to ultrasonic applications in tissue and composites characterization. He has been a researcher at NASA Langley Research Center in the Nondestructive Evaluation Sciences Branch since 1986 where he applies the ultrasound to aerospace materials and structures, including composites and metallic ultrasonic arrays and also works on array methods. He has been among the IUS Group 2 Program Committee members since 1986.

Dr. Matthew Webster received his PhD degree in Engineering Mechanics from Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA, USA. He is currently a Research Physicist at NASA Langley Research Center in the Nondestructive Evaluation Sciences Branch. He has applied his academic background in Engineering Mechanics within the U.S. Army’s technology development community and for several years in industry leading government-funded NDE research and development programs. He joined NASA in early 2022 where he conducts research related to ultrasonic NDE. Before joining NASA, he was a Team Lead for NDE research at Luna Innovations Inc., VA, USA.

• AI in ultrasound hosted by Jaime Tierney
Speakers: Ruud JG van Sloun and Lasse Løvstakken

Ruud JG van Sloun (Member, IEEE) received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees (cum laude) in electrical engineering and the Ph.D. degree (cum laude) from the Eindhoven University of Technology, Eindhoven, The Netherlands, in 2012, 2014, and 2018, respectively. Since then, he has been an Assistant Professor with the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Eindhoven University of Technology and since January 2020 a Kickstart-AI fellow at Philips Research, Eindhoven. From 2019-2020 he was also a Visiting Professor with the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel. He is an NWO Rubicon laureate and received a Google Faculty Research Award in 2020. His current research interests include artificial intelligence and deep learning for signal processing and imaging, model-based deep learning, compressed sensing, ultrasound imaging, and probabilistic signal and image analysis.

Lasse Løvstakken is a Professor and Head of the ultrasound research group at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Department of Circulation and Medical Imaging. His research interests include quantitative medical ultrasound, advanced image formation, visualization of blood and tissue dynamics, and AI/machine learning. He has taken part in the deep learning revolution for image analysis and image formation, and his group has developed new tools for improving image quality, workflow, measurement robustness in echocardiography inside and outside the hospital.
